STOVEPLUS ACADEMY 2017, 4th edition in the Philippines!
Every year since 2014, GERES StovePlus team organizes its StovePlus Academy, a five-day event gathering cooking energy entrepreneurs to exchange experience, provide peer support, and learn from sector experts on how to develop their enterprise.
After Africa’s sessions in Kenya (2014), Ghana (2015), and Sierra Leone (2016), it’s now time for the Philippines to launch the first Asian StovePlus Academy edition. It will take place from the 20th to the 24th of February 2017, in Iloilo city (Panay Island in the Visayas), with the following focus: Business Development for Improved Cookstoves and Innovative Biomass Fuels.
This edition is adapted to the specific Filipino cooking energy market context. According to the latest national survey (2011 HECS Highlights), fuelwood is most commonly used by more than half (54%) of the households in the country for cooking, while the current supply of improved cookstoves is still far from able to meet the potential domestic market for the product. The geographic situation is one of the challenges as the archipelago is made of more than 7.000 islands. Even if the country hosts many local inventors and entrepreneurs of improved cookstoves, the market is still very island-based.
The general objective of StovePlus Academies is to increase regional and nationwide collaboration and knowledge sharing about the industry and strengthen entrepreneurs' capacity to diversify the production of improved biomass cooking devices and innovative fuel solutions.
Besides moving the cooking energy industry forward, the broader objective is to genuinely reach the average citizen; local entrepreneurs can play an important role in helping educate the public on innovative fuel and improved cookstoves products and techniques and their economic, social, health, and environmental benefits.
During the StovePlus Academy unique experience, the Filipino participants will learn about the key points to develop their business such as testing protocols, market and value chain study, access to finance, and marketing. StovePlus Academy offers a full-packed timetable composed of practical workshop sessions, roundtable discussions, and sharing of experiences, facilitated by two international cooking energy experts, Ms. Christa Roth and Mr. Carlo Figa Talamanca.
Up to 40 cooking energy stakeholders active in different islands are expected to attend this workshop which is made possible thanks to the support from the REXEL Foundation, Peace and Equity Foundation, ADB Energy4All, Iloilo CODE NGOs, Inc., the French Global Environment Facility and the Central Philippine University.
